Still Waters: The First Gospel Message

Genesis 3:15 “And I will put enmity between thee and the woman, and between thy seed and her seed; it shall bruise thy head, and thou shalt bruise his heel.”

Adam and Eve, standing before Almighty God in their guilt, condemned and cursed because of their sin, were not left without hope. Genesis 3, Verse 15, is the first promise given in God’s Word of the hope of salvation through the “seed” of the woman. As God was pronouncing the devastating curse brought upon all because of sin, He gave promise of One Who would crush the head of the adversary and provide the hope of redemption for fallen humanity. This prophecy declared that the Deliverer would be presented to the world through a miraculous birth; “the seed of the woman.” It also revealed that redemption would only be made possible through the suffering of the “Seed;” “...thou shalt bruise His heel.” So, here in the Garden of Eden, during the pronouncement of Divine judgement for sin that had entered into the world through the disobedience of Adam and Eve, God promised hope through the Christ. See the following passages: Isaiah 7:14; Matthew 1:23-25; Luke 1:31-35, 76; Galatians 4:4; Romans 16:20; Hebrews 2:14-15; 1 John 3:8.
